Design Trends: GOLD IS MAKING A HOT RETURN

One of the hottest trends in design right now is the return of GOLD!
GOLD is sophisticated and glamorous, elegant and old world….Think Hollywood Regency back in the day (not 1980's brass).  We are seeing it everywhere from the runway to furniture to decorative accessories and I am loving using it in my own home.

Take a look at some of these fabulous examples.

The wildly anticipated launch of Aerin Lauder's home collection last year featured almost all of her decorative accessories in gold.

It's even making an appearance in the kitchen and bath! How stunning is this range hood??

The Lost Art of the Thank You Note

Do you send thank you notes?

At our house, everyone sends thank you notes.  My children have been required to send notes on their own since they were able to write their name (and I think they have had personalized stationery since they were born…not kidding!)   It is not always a fun task but (most) times a requirement. They send them not only to friends but also to family… something I believe in very strongly.

From my talented friend, Emily McCarthy's beautiful website!

Whenever a gift receiving occasion occurs, a special party is attended, or a kind invitation is extended… you can be sure the moans and groans will be following from the peanut gallery. They know what's coming.

However - In this crazy, busy, technology driven world we call life, I find it is more important than ever that we should slow down and go back to the simple but meaningful gesture of expressing gratitude to others.  The reason is two-fold….

Most importantly, it lets the person who gave the gift, hosted the party, made the casserole when you were sick…whatever it is... know that their time, efforts, and thoughtfulness were appreciated.  It will put a smile on their face… and all it really takes is LESS THAN 5 MINUTES!  None of us are too busy or too important that we cannot extend such a simple kindness…  And let's not ignore that it is, quite frankly, the right thing to do.  While sooner is definitely better than later - the gesture will be happily received so don't get hung up on the fact that you did not write it in the first 24 hours as Princess Diana used to do.  As they say at NIKE… Just Do It!

Second, encouraging and engaging in gratitude is good for our soul.  Research shows that expressing gratitude makes us happier and healthier and since gratitude is a social emotion - it requires us to see how we have been supported by other people… (Hence the nice gift, the party invitation, the casserole….) and strengthens our relationships with them. A warm and fuzzy WIN/WIN on both accounts.

As the holidays were winding down and I was sitting with my girls writing our thank you notes together at the kitchen table, I was reflecting on the LOST ART OF THE THANK YOU NOTE …. and I think it is time it made a come back.

What do think?

My Favorite Things for January

This crazy January weather has me in a mood…. and not always a good one.  Here are a few of my favorite things getting me through the grey days of winter.

 My fabulous Pratesi cashmere throw!

Mine is the blue one on the 4th stool...Truly the color of Heaven.  It might be one of the most luxurious things I own. And truth be told… I scored it at a Pratesi sample sale while living in London… so it makes it even that more fabulous.

OK - my daughter received one for Christmas and I was totally smitten. I barely made it a week before having to run out and get my own.  It is amazing how actually seeing the number of steps you have taken for the day makes you want to run out and take the dog for a walk…and I don't even really like the dog.

BONUS FEATURE… while you are lifting your wine glass, it is counting that movement toward your FUEL points goal. (FUEL Points are Nike's propriety measurement for measuring the energy you have used throughout the day).
WIN WIN!

BONUS FEATURE #2… After I bought mine, I came across this article in Vogue…now it's almost as cool as my Pratesi throw!

Hands down, the greatest lip balm ever created. I have been using it for years and could not live without it.  (apparently, my girls can't either as I find it hiding in their rooms!)  Reason??  It actually works. Truly makes your winter lips feel like velvet. You can't get yours fast enough.

I have been hooked from day one.  I find it ridiculously therapeutic but don't always have the time to spend on it I would like.  These cold, rainy days have helped me find more time and I am loving my all my new inspirations!  Come and follow me here.!

My new book for the month!  For (literally) as long as I can remember I have been a Francophile.  The older I get, the more fascinated I become with beautiful French women, the way they approach life and how they seem to age effortlessly and with such grace.  Here is part of the synopsis from Amazon…Doesn't it draw you in from the from the first sentence?

For any woman who last saw forty on her speedometer comes a sparkling new primer for aging—the French way—with grace and style. Frenchwomen of a certain age (over forty) are captivating and complex. They appear younger than their years and remain stylish throughout their lives. They look at birthdays as a celebration of a life well-lived and perhaps a good reason to go shopping before they dress to perfection for a celebration of another anniversaire. American-born journalist and blogger Tish Jett has lived among the French for years and has studied them and stalked them to learn their secrets. Exploring how their wardrobe, beauty, diet, and hair rituals evolve with time and how some aspects of their signature styles never change, Jett shows how Frenchwomen know their strengths, hide their weaknesses, and never talk about their fears, failures, or flaws. After all, in France, beauty, style, and charm have no expiration dates!

I love having my nails painted a great color… I think it is such a reflection of one's sense of style.  However, the nature of my job (which consists of constantly lugging samples, furniture, plants, rugs, etc) usually prohibits me have indulging in my favorite red or navy blue.  This fab new color plays as a neutral but has a little more substance… and it is much hipper… than my usual Mademoiselle color by Essie.  It has just a hint of shimmer...which i do not usually like…but it seems to add a little bit of elegance to what could possibly otherwise make my pale hands look dead.  Highly recommend!

I would love to hear what your favorite things are getting you through this winter!

The Love of Entertaining: Kappa Tablescapes Dallas

Recently, I was asked to participate in the Dallas Kappa Tablescape charity event. Given how much I love to entertain and the sheer pleasure I find in setting just the right table, I jumped at the opportunity.

I knew almost immediately that the theme for my table design would be based on blue and white Chinoiserie.

While many of the participants are professional event planners and florists, I knew I could not compete on such a grand scale floral level so I set out to design a table anyone could put together.  The starting point was these beautiful Raynaud salad plates that I purchased when I lived in London.

PLACE SETTING INFORMATION
Salad Plate: Raynaud, Si Kiang
Dinner Plate: Raynaud Marie Antoinette
Charger: Este Ce

The next most important piece of the puzzle would be what I would use for the centerpiece if I was not going to go the large floral route.  It made complete sense that it would be these fabulous ginger jars from my good friend, Jennifer, at THE PINK PAGODA.  I used the large version in the middle with very small versions around the table.

I filled the jar with paper Chinese umbrellas that I decorated with beautiful trim, silk butterflies, and hanging glass balls filled with tea lights. I tucked them into some bamboo sticks to hold them up in the jar and vary the heights.

My final touch was orchids in paper take out boxes…spruced up with some pretty grosgrain ribbon and a few more tiny butterflies.

This was a beautiful event with truly design inspirations coming from every single designer and table. I was grateful for the opportunity to be included.

Happy Monday!

My word for 2014

via PINTEREST

Happy New Year, Friends!

Like many of you at this time of year, I have been struggling with whether or not to set any New Year's Resolutions… struggling because, really… what's the point in setting them when they are the same handful of things every year and I accomplish none of them?  Hence - I typically choose not to set any so I have not failed on January 2nd and doomed myself for the rest of the year. Sound familiar?

But something about 2014 feels different.

I have been noticing a lot of friends and bloggers have been selecting a word for the year.  While I did not really understand much about it, I was quite intrigued by this idea... so I set out to do a little research on the topic and I LOVE what I have discovered.

So - this whole notion of selecting a word for the year is to help you narrow down and focus on a goal, a desire, a life change…whatever happens to be speaking to you in your life yet you have not been able to fine tune and articulate.  It is a brilliant concept, really.

Following the advice of fellow blogger, Ali Edwards, I started with the LIST she published last year and my process was this… I wrote down any word on the list that grabbed me.  When I got to the end, I had 22 words written down.

What I found was almost mind blowing... they really all connected to one another… a theme, of sorts, emerged that reflected some words actually acting as building blocks to others.  Next, I grouped the words that went together and crossed them off the list one by one.  What I discovered was a bright, clear path leading me to the last word on the list.  And you will never guess… It is EXACTLY the right word for me for 2014.

(Humor me with the biz school flow chart…)

So my word for 2014 is ACCOMPLISH!

I am so excited, I can hardly stand it.  Now that I have my WORD FOR THE YEAR, it seems ridiculously easy to set a few personal and professional goals.  This was an amazingly easy exercise for the amount of enlightenment it provided.  Bring on the new year!

What's your word of the year?  I would love to know!
