Design Trend :: Deep Dark Walls

Elle Decor

Recently, I have been quite drawn to the darker walled rooms... whether it be a lacquered paint or a very dark wood paneling.  It is not anything I have ever designed in my own house and have only once or twice recommended to a client... But there is something lately that keeps drawing me in.  A coziness... a richness... a sophistication, perhaps.  Maybe all these "clean spaces" of late are leaving me wanting more.

I really like the old world glamour it adds to a room. Making a bold design decision such as this is not for the faint of heart...it shows you have conviction in your design style... and it definitely exudes a personal confidence, as well.

I am smitten... and cannot think of where to execute this fast enough!

What are your thoughts on the darker walls?  Yes or No??

Design Trend :: Velvet

I am often asked what is my favorite fabric is to use in a project.... I instantly answer VELVET!  I love everything about it and it can be used just about anywhere...except outside!

Velvet looks and feels SO luxurious. I love to use it most on sofas and dining chairs... places where people spend substantial amounts of time because it has a decadence and softness about it that is so comfortable... But I also love it as draperies or accents such as pillows or foot stools.  It brings beauty and texture to a room like nothing else... pure elegance, indeed!

Velvet fabric has a really interesting history. It has been around since 2000BC and was originally created by the Egyptians.  Throughout the centuries, it was a product primarily reserved for those of nobility given its very high cost to produce. Up through the Renaissance period, velvet was only made of silk but contemporary velvets today can be a blend of many fibers, both natural and synthetic.

Next time you are looking for a new piece of upholstery, I invite you to consider a velvet fabric.  It is timeless and classic.... you will not be disappointed.

Design Trends: The Fabulous World of Wallpaper!

Tiffany Jones Interiors

I have always been a fan of wallpaper… It has so much more personality than paint and can really make a ho-hum room come alive and feel more elegant.  It adds a layer of sophistication, if you will.

It truly transforms a room like nothing else and quickly defines ones' style.  Depending on the pattern selected, wallpaper can make any sort of statement to reflect your style.  A softer palette can creating a calming effect while something more bright will add energy to the space.  Many people tend to think of wallpaper as old-fashioned…In my opinion, nothing could be farther from the truth.  I have used it in every house I have ever owned… even having the walls one my houses almost 100% covered. (I still think of it as one of my favorites!)

Honestly, I am not sure why people factor wallpaper in general into the "trend" category…In my opinion, it is a classic execution of design. Like anything design related, the popularity of  things ebb and flow…. And while I have never stopped using it, thankfully, those who are in charge of setting the trends have declared that wallpaper is making a HUGE comeback!

Here are some of my favorite examples of absolute wallpaper gorgeousness!

For many people, the idea of committing to a wallpaper is scary… If it seems too much for you, try just wallpapering one wall for an accent.

Design Trends: GOLD IS MAKING A HOT RETURN

One of the hottest trends in design right now is the return of GOLD!
GOLD is sophisticated and glamorous, elegant and old world….Think Hollywood Regency back in the day (not 1980's brass).  We are seeing it everywhere from the runway to furniture to decorative accessories and I am loving using it in my own home.

Take a look at some of these fabulous examples.

The wildly anticipated launch of Aerin Lauder's home collection last year featured almost all of her decorative accessories in gold.
